Why are we flushing fire hydrants and operating water valves?

The City of West Linn aims to provide high quality drinking water to all residents within the water service area. To ensure proper working order of fire hydrants and water system valves crews use specialized valve maintenance equipment to ensure all water valves are accessible and operable in case of an emergency or routine water shutdowns. During this process crews also assess the general condition of each fire hydrant and valve.

As crews operate water system valves and flush fire hydrants, you may notice discolored water due to the removal of sediment.

You may notice signs in your neighborhood stating crews are flushing and you can expect discolored water.

Is discolored water safe to use?

During water system flushing and maintenance you may have discolored water. The water is safe from harmful bacteria, but unpleasant for consumption and use. While it may not be visually appealing, it is safe to drink and continues to meet all federal and state drinking water standards. There is no health hazards associated with the discolored water.

What should I do if I notice discolored water?

If you encounter discolored water following water system maintenance in your area we suggest you run cold water taps throughout your home (kitchen faucets, bathroom sinks and tubs, etc.) for five to ten minutes until the water runs clear. This allows the discolored water to work its way out of your household plumbing.
