UPDATE ARCHIVE:

March 8, 2022 Update

Join us this Friday, March 11th, at 11am for the new West Linn Post Office Grand Opening Celebration! Congressman Kurt Schrader, Mayor Jules Walters, USPS District Manager Bill Schwarz, West Linn Postmaster Geddy Ponce, and representatives from Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley’s offices will all be present to celebrate alongside your friendly West Linn Post Office staff. The event will be held outside in front of the new West Linn Post Office, located at 22220 Salamo Rd., adjacent to Safeway. Come cut the ribbon with us!

February 22, 2022 Update

The new post office location at 22220 Salamo Rd. is open! The first customers were welcomed with coffee, cookies, and doughnuts in the lobby the morning of Twosday 2/22/22. For a list of services and contact information, see the USPS website.

February 8, 2022 Update

The USPS has announced February 22, 2022 as their anticipated opening date! Yes, that's Twosday, 2/22/22 at 22220 Salamo Rd, in the Cascade Summit Shopping Center near Safeway. Their new hours of operation will be Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

January 26, 2022 Update

Contractors remain hard at work renovating the new West Linn Post Office located in the Cascade Summit Shopping Center near Safeway. Significant construction progress has been made and contractors are expected to finish this phase of work in the next few weeks. After the contractors leave, USPS facilities crews will come in and begin their own work to “postalize” the new location. This includes installing all the specialized equipment and improvements needed for post office operations. The USPS hasn’t finalized an anticipated opening deadline, but we will be sure to share the news when it becomes available.

September 29, 2021 Update

We are excited to share that work on the new West Linn Post Office is making great progress! After the final tenant has relocated to their new space across the parking lot, the full interior of the building will be remodeled to meet the needs of our growing post office. Behind the building the parking lot is being demolished to make way for new truck loading ramps. While we were optimistic for a holiday season opening, materials shortages are affecting how quickly the work can be done.

May 26, 2021 - Update from Mayor Jules Walters

After a few years of uncertainty and hard work, I am very pleased to announce that a full-service US Post Office will be returning to West Linn. The United States Postal Service has secured a long-term lease for a 10,000 square foot facility in an existing building near Safeway in the Cascade Summit Shopping Center at 22000 Salamo Road. Our new Post Office will have all functions that the community is looking for including retail, PO boxes, package pickup, sorting, and mail carrier parking.  Construction work will begin in June, and we hope the facility will be open this Fall. The City of West Linn is committed to expediting all needed permits and providing other assistance to ensure our community has a Post Office as soon as possible. The USPS has a ten-year lease with two five-year extension options included, so the Post Office will be here for a long time.

The scarcity of available land in West Linn made it very difficult to find a location capable of meeting the Postal Service’s needs for the future. The Cascade Summit site is centrally located for the entire city, is already zoned commercial, and is compatible with neighboring businesses, so it meets all of the criteria we were looking for. I think it’s a great solution for West Linn.

Several existing tenants will be relocating or closing in the shopping center, which is creating the space for the Post Office. The City will be working with all of them to provide assistance or alternatives where appropriate.  This includes The Summit youth center run by Willamette Christian Church, which has been a valued part of our community for a decade. I know many kids in our community take advantage of what The Summit offers, and its departure will really underline the critical need for indoor community recreation facilities in West Linn. Addressing this need is a priority for myself and the City Council and I look forward to discussions with the community in the future about this.

The search for a permanent Post Office location has taken far longer than any of us wanted, but we have finally achieved that goal together. I want to thank everyone who has been involved along the way. First of all, West Linn’s residents and business owners. You kept this issue front and center for the USPS, the City of West Linn, and our Federal delegation. Hearing a clear message from our community ensured that we all worked on this together as a priority. Thanks also to Senator Jeff Merkley, Senator Ron Wyden, and Representative Kurt Schrader for keeping up the pressure on USPS, for intervening at key points along the way, and always advocating on behalf of West Linn residents. Thanks to City Councilors past and present and to City of West Linn staff, who have spent many hours working on solutions, looking for sites, and keeping the public informed. Finally, I want to thank John Wynton at ROIC (owners of the Cascade Summit center), realtors Brad Macomber and Raleigh Lau at Commercial Integrity NW, and staff at the USPS, who all moved very quickly to bring this solution together.

The City will keep residents and businesses up to date on progress towards re-opening as work progresses.

Thank you.

March 10, 2021 Update

On March 10th USPS held a meeting to update the community on the status of the West Linn Post Office and explain the next steps to ensure a permanent Post Office in West Linn. Details and the meeting video can be found here.

February 16, 2021 Update

The West Linn Post Office suspended operations at their current location on February 16, 2021 as USPS staff had to vacate the building prior to their lease expiration on February 28, 2021. Post Office operations have been relocated temporarily  until a permanent home in West Linn can be found (read latest notice from USPS).

Deliveries to West Linn addresses will continue without interruption, but until a new location is identified, residents and businesses will need to visit the Oregon City Post Office for package pickup, and the Gladstone Post Office for retail services and PO Boxes. Additional retail locations include Marylhurst, Lake Oswego, and other surrounding cities (USPS locator tool).

Temporary Post Office Services:

Gladstone Post Office (Retail Services and Post Office Box Mail*)

605 Portland Ave., Gladstone OR 97027

Hours: 8:30am-5:00pm M-F, 10:00am-1:00pm Saturday

*West Linn PO Box addresses will remain the same during this temporary change

Oregon City Post Office (Retail Services, Parcel pickup, certified mail, express, and other signature items)

19300 Molalla Ave., Oregon City OR 97045

Hours: 8:30am-5:00pm M-F

Marylhurst Post Office (Retail Services)

17600 Pacific Hwy., Marylhurst OR 97036

Hours: 10:00am-4:00pm M-F

The USPS apologizes for the inconvenience during this time of transition and reminds customers that the Post Office is always open 24/7 at usps.com to purchase stamps, ship a package or mail a letter. The blue mail outgoing mail collection boxes in front of the West Linn Post Office building will remain for now, but pickup time is changed to 2:00pm. Please feel free to call Portland District Marketing with any concerns at 971-201-3601

The USPS remains committed to having a full-service Post Office in West Linn and provided a written status update (2/10/21) to respond to Oregon's federal delegation letter (2/4/21), reiterating this and their willingness to meet and work with the community. Senator Jeff Merkley’s office has requested that the USPS hold a virtual meeting to answer questions and explain next steps in their site search. Stay tuned for details which will be announced soon.

The search for a replacement facility has been underway for more than a year without success. The search is difficult as there are simply not available properties in West Linn that meet the specific needs of the USPS. City Council and City Staff continue to work with USPS representatives on a regular basis trying to find a new permanent location for the Post Office  in West Linn's limited and challenging real estate market. We continue to encourage your lobbying efforts of our federal delegation as they share our concerns for accessible postal services (read our federal delegation's 2/4/21 joint letter to USPS). If you have any leads on property meeting USPS criteria you can reach out to Greg Shelton in USPS Real Estate. (contact info in "1/20/21 Update" below for both purposes).

February 4, 2021 Update

Oregon's federal delegation sent a joint letter to the USPS on February 4, 2021  expressing their profound concerns surrounding the process of relocating West Linn's Post Office. In the letter Senator Merkley, Senator Wyden, and Representative Schrader explain their frustration with the lack of public process and have requested details about clearer USPS plans for a West Linn location and how West Linn postal customers can access postal services during the transition. Read the letter here.

Thank you to those of you in the West Linn community that took the time recently to reach out to our federal delegation to increase the visibility of this critical issue. We continue to encourage your lobbying efforts. If you have any leads on property meeting USPS criteria you can reach out to Greg Shelton in USPS Real Estate. Contact information for both can be found under the "1/20/21 Update" below.

January 20, 2021 Update

West Linn residents were recently sent a letter from the West Linn Post Office notifying their lease expires February 28, 2021. Post Office operations will be relocated temporarily until a permanent home in West Linn can be found.  City Council and City Staff continue to work with USPS representatives on a regular basis trying to find a new permanent location for the Post Office and continue to explore options in West Linn's limited and challenging real estate market. USPS officials continue to reiterate their commitment to the community of West Linn and their presence in the community since January 1850. To be considered as an option, one of the following criteria would be required:

  • Land to purchase that is approximately 75,000 SF.
  • A building to lease that is approximately 10,000 SF with 65 exclusive parking stalls.
  • A retail building to lease that is approximately 3,150 SF with 27 parking stalls and a carrier building with two docks and 44 parking stalls.

Please contact Greg Shelton, Real Estate Specialist for the USPS, at Gregory.l.Shelton2@usps.gov if you have any property to discuss. The USPS has done an extensive review of available real estate in West Linn, but remains open and receptive to new solutions the community may be able to provide.

Members of the West Linn community are also gathering to lobby our federal delegation to ensure the future of West Linn's Post Office. We encourage your support in calling or emailing your federal representatives to further raise the visibility of this important issue for West Linn:

Senator Ron Wyden contact form (office phone numbers and locations)

Representative Kurt Schrader contact form (office phone numbers and locations)

December 23, 2020 Update

For more than a year, the status of West Linn’s Post Office has been in question due to challenges at the existing location and the lack of alternative sites to build a new facility. The United States Postal Service has confirmed they are committed to finding a permanent location in West Linn, and it will be one of two options:

  • An all-in-one facility similar to the current Post Office.
  • A smaller, retail-only facility (storefront) providing retail services and post office boxes only.

Thank you to all of you who took the time to respond to our October Post Office survey, including preferences on Post Office layout options. The results from just over 600 participants were provided to Council to inform their lobbying efforts.

The Mayor and City staff met with USPS representatives again the week of December 21 to work cooperatively towards a solution for West Linn's Post Office service. Our Council and staff will continue working with the USPS and our federal representatives to show West Linn's strong support for maintaining a Post Office in West Linn.

While awaiting the decision of USPS on a permanent location in West Linn, the owner of the current Post Office property is moving forward with desired improvements to the building and surrounding parking lot that will accommodate a new Post Office or additional retail space. The West Linn Planning Commission opened a public hearing on December 2, 2020 that was continued to December 16 to consider a site Design Review to construct/replace the existing Post Office Building with a new Post Office Building or Retail Building with a Shared Parking Area at 5665/5639 Hood Street. On December 16, the Planning Commission approved the land use application, and the final decision was mailed December 23. More information on the project and decision can be found on the project page here.

I also want to thank Barry Cain of Gramor, Greg Shelton of the USPS, and Interim City Manager John Williams for working together with us on this important community initiative. We're grateful to everyone."
