Statement from West Linn Police Regarding George Floyd

On May 31, 2020 the Acting West Linn Police Chief Released the following statement:

By now everyone has seen the horrific video of George Floyd dying at the hands of the Minneapolis Police. The West Linn Police Department joins other agencies locally and across the nation in formally condemning the actions of those officers. The violent protests across the country are evidence of yet another blow to the fragile relationship between the police and their communities.

Last week I sent out an internal message reinforcing the expectation that each officer, regardless of rank or seniority has the responsibility to intervene when one of us has crossed the line. This profession requires us to protect those who cannot protect themselves. This tragedy was avoidable if even one of the other three officers on scene would have intervened.

The West Linn Police Department is working hard to earn our communities trust back. We all realize this incident has instilled even more fear and distrust in our community, especially to people of color. I want to reassure our residents that the West Linn Police Department is committed to providing fair and equitable police services to all.

Peter Mahuna
Acting Chief
West Linn Police
