Police Review & Recommend Committee Application

Police oversight is an important step in building community trust; not only can it improve individual accountability, it also benefits the police department, elected officials, and the wider community through greater involvement in police matters. 

West Linn's Police Review and Recommend Committee was established in December 2022 by Council to review and make recommendations to the West Linn Police Chief, Human Resources Director, and City Manager in the following areas:  the Police Department’s complaint, investigation, and discipline process; individual complaints, investigations, and disciplinary actions in the Police Department; Police Department policy and progress toward recommended reforms; and relevant trends and reports produced by the Police Department.

We invite your application to be involved with police oversight and recommending improvements in policing in our community. Specialized experience in police matters is not required to apply, training will be provided, however in making or approving appointments, the Mayor and City Council shall take into consideration an applicants’:

1. Demonstrated ability to be fair, impartial and unbiased,
2. Absence of any real or perceived bias, prejudice or conflict of interest, and
3. Ability to build working relationships and communicate effectively.

Appointments shall follow the same process that is used for Community Advisory Groups as described in Chapter 2.030 of the Municipal Code. Other criteria for membership that apply, as well as a potential removal from office, will be consistent with West Linn Municipal Code.

Members will be subject to special conditions in order to serve per Ordinance 1741, including, but not limited to:

1. Background checks
2. Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements
3. Training
4. Oregon State CJIS certification may be required to access some of the information that the committee members may use in their work
