Hello Neighbors-
Please join us March 9th at 7 pm at City hall to review the status of Sunset School and the pending sale of a portion of Sunset Park to the School District in order to keep Sunset at Sunset.
Our Neighborhood Plan has a goal of keeping Sunset School as a defining element of the neighborhood. There are several of us who have been working with the School District to devise a workable plan for keeping the school adjacent to the park. To do so will require some compromise. In order to continue educating students in the existing school building while a new building is being built, a portion of the park is likely needed to some extent. Without this compromise, keeping the school next to the park may very likely not happen. The City and School District (SD) have committed to work with the SNA through the SD’s process to best manage use of any needed land and to mitigate potential impacts to the park site. There is a commitment to develop a joint site master plan in order to incorporate and balance beneficial elements. We believe this presents an opportunity to take the wonderful collocated amenity we have today and work together to make it even better ultimately. By staying involved and having input in the process as we move forward and by working collaboratively with the SD and City, we think we can achieve a solution which benefits the neighborhood for many generations to come.
While this solution likely requires some compromises, it is the solution that best serves our neighborhood, the residents and the students. Please come learn more, share interests and support this most important decision for our neighborhood. We hope to pass a resolution in support of this concept on March 9th.
The City has worked with the School District to facilitate a sale of a portion of the park and to vacate certain right of ways adjacent to and within the park in order to keep Sunset at Sunset. There are provisions in the pending sale agreement which protect the long term use of the park in the event the school cannot remain in Sunset for some future reason. Our understanding and support of this continued joint use concept is essential to this sale being validated in the upcoming City-wide May election. Please come learn, share and support keeping the park and school within our neighborhood! Thank you!
