Barking Dogs

Barking Complaints are one of the more frequent complaints we receive. While a barking dog can be a deterrent to would-be intruders; it can be frustrating to live near a dog that is unhappy and sharing it with the neighborhood. We always recommend making an effort to courteously advise your neighbor of your concerns as they may be unaware of their pet's behavior. We also have an ordinance pertaining specifically to barking.

West Linn Municipal Code 5.260 (5)
It shall be a violation for a keeper of any dog to permit any dog to cause unreasonable annoyance, alarm or noise disturbance at any time of the day or night by repeated barking, whining, howling or other like sounds which may be heard beyond the boundary of the keeper’s property.

Definition of violation:
Animals: Owning, possession or harboring a dog or other animal that barks, bays, cries, howls or makes any other loud or noticeably annoying noise continuously for a period of 15 minutes in any hour except for animals provoked by a person trespassing, threatening to trespass or unambiguously taunting the animal.

Penalties and Fines:
You may be cited to appear in court and fined up to $500.00 per violation. Chronic violations may encourage the judge to order your dog to be removed from the City of West Linn.
