A senior officer, having undergone additional required training, can be assigned as the designated supervisor for a particular shift based on the department's needs.
Field Training Officer (FTO)
An FTO is a senior patrol officer who is assigned a new recruit officer. The recruit officer typically has recently graduated from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) academy. The FTO and new recruit are paired together for an allotted amount of field training time as the FTO coaches the recruit in real-world situations to become an independently functioning police officer.
Crisis Intervention Officer (CIT)
WLPD greatly values officer training and awareness surrounding responses to mental health issues. We strive to send every officer to a 40-hour course to be CIT certified through our BHU partnership.
