Returning Library Materials

Library users have multiple options when returning books and other materials. In addition to book drops on each floor inside the library, there is an external slot on the west side of the building that is available around the clock. Materials checked out at our library can also be returned to any Clackamas County library.

Book drops are for library materials only. We do not have the space or staffing to accept donations in these book drops. Please bring donations directly to the library!

There are also standalone book drops at the following locations:

  • In the parking lot of the West Linn Adult Community Center: 1180 Rosemont Rd.
  • Outside the Pacific West Bank branch in the Willamette neighborhood: 2040 8th Ave.
  • In the parking lot of the Emmanuel Presbyterian church in the Robinwood neighborhood: 19200 Willamette Dr.
  • In the parking lot outside Sunset Fire Hall: 2215 Long St. (The book drop outside Sunset Primary has been moved to the Sunset Fire Hall due to repeated damage)

The remote book drops are not cleared every day. Rest assured, we backdate check-in to the day when items were returned, so fines won't be applied for days when we haven't been able to retrieve materials.

Lost Items

Library materials are considered lost if they are not returned within 45 days of the due date.  At that point, a billing notice is mailed, and a lost item charge is applied to the patron’s library account.  The original purchase price is used to determine the lost item fee.

If an item is returned within six months of being marked lost, the lost item fee is waived, and applicable overdue fines are applied.  If the lost item fee has already been paid, a credit for that amount will be applied to the patron’s library account.  This credit can be used to settle overdue fines and other fees.  No cash refunds will be issued.

The library cannot accept replacement items in exchange for lost materials.  It can be difficult to get the correct format and edition when acquiring replacements.  There are also additional costs associated with processing that aren’t considered when a replacement is purchased outside of the library’s normal channels.  Librarians may also decide that another item is a better option for the collection.

Damaged Items

Patrons are responsible for returning library materials in the same condition in which they were borrowed.  Charges may be applied to replace missing parts or to repair or replace damaged items.

Interlibrary Loans

*At this time each patron is limited to TEN active ILL requests at a time; this includes ILL items currently checked out. Please call us if you have any questions.

With a shared catalog and a courier that delivers materials seven days a week, borrowing items from other LINCC libraries is simple and quick.  If you are looking for an item that isn't owned by any library in Clackamas County, you can place an interlibrary loan (ILL) request at the West Linn Public Library. This process cannot be done online since a librarian needs to ensure that the correct item is ordered. To place a request, please call 503-656-7853 x5 or e-mail wlref@lincc.org. We'll need as much information as you have about the item as well as as your library card number.

Please keep in mind that we are unable to submit ILL requests for audiovisual materials or fiction books published in the current or previous calendar year.

Lucky Day items

Lucky Day items new and popular items that typically have a long wait list. The books and media belonging to the Lucky Day collection cannot be placed on hold or renewed, so patrons that find them on the shelf can take them home without the wait. It's your Lucky Day!

Lucky Day items check out for 14 days and are limited to (3) items per library card.

West Linn Public Library has a robust Library of Things that can be viewed here.

  • Checkout period is 14 days, and checkouts are renewable.
  • You have seven (7) days to pick the item up from the owning library once you receive a notification that it is ready.
  • All Library of Things items must be returned to the owning library’s checkout desk during open hours. Do not return items to book drops or a different library.
