Children’s Room and Teen Room Policy

Purpose

West Linn Public Library is committed to providing welcoming, safe spaces for youth that are responsive to their needs. The Children’s and Teen areas of the Library are designed specifically to serve younger patrons.  Limiting these spaces by age helps create environments where children and teens feel comfortable, supported and able to use Library resources effectively.

The Children’s Room, including the Young Teen area, is intended for use by children from birth through grade 5 and their parents, guardians, or caregivers.

The Teen Room is intended primarily for use by teens in grades 6–12.

Use of Youth Spaces

Children’s Room and Young Teen Area

Adults in the Children’s Room or Young Teen Area must be browsing the room’s materials or be accompanying a child. Adults who are not browsing materials or accompanying a child will be asked to leave the area.

Teen Room

Adults or younger children may enter the Teen Room briefly to visit with a teen or browse teen materials. The Teen Room prioritizes space for teens. Individuals who are not visiting a teen, browsing materials, or participating in a teen program will be asked to use other areas of the Library.

Youth Programs

Early Childhood Programs

Early childhood programs are designed for young children and their parents, guardians, or caregivers and provide opportunities for shared learning, early literacy development, and social interaction. Caregivers are expected to remain with their child and participate in programs.

School-Age Programs

School-age programs are designed for children within the intended age or grade range and provide opportunities for learning, creativity, and positive social interaction. Due to space limitations or program design, parents or caregivers may not be able to attend these programs. If a child requires caregiver support in order to participate, families are encouraged to speak with Library staff in advance about possible accommodations.

Young Teen Programs

Young teen programs are offered for youth within the intended age or grade range and are designed to support learning, creativity, and positive social connection. Individuals who are not part of the intended audience may be asked to leave.

Teen Programs

Teen programs and activities are designed specifically for teens within the intended age or grade range and provide opportunities for learning, creativity, and social connection in a teen-centered space. Individuals who are not part of the intended audience may be asked to leave.

Supervision of Children

Parents, guardians, and caregivers are responsible for the supervision and behavior of children in their care while visiting the Library.

Library staff are not responsible for supervising children. Children should have appropriate supervision based on their age, abilities, and level of independence. For additional guidance, see the Library’s Unattended Children Policy.

Use of Downstairs Restrooms

Restrooms located in the Youth Services area are primarily intended for use by children and youth, their parents, guardians, or caregivers, and Library staff. Other patrons should use the restrooms located upstairs. Exceptions may be made to accommodate accessibility or medical needs.
