Fire Hydrant Flushing

The City of West Linn Water Department maintains 120 miles of water mains ranging from 1 inch to 24 inches in diameter, 9000 service connections, 1000 fire hydrants, 6 reservoirs, 6 pump stations, and 33 pressure reducing stations. Flushing is an important element in the continuing program to improve water quality in our system and continue to meet state and federal requirements. This procedure clears the distribution system of non-harmful sediment that builds up over time. The Water Department schedules flushing activities Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. during low water use times. While we are flushing in your neighborhood, you may experience decreased water pressure and/or temporary discoloration of your water. If you observe flushing taking place in your neighborhood, please avoid using the water until it is completed. If discoloration occurs, customers are advised to simply run their cold water for a few minutes by opening your outside hose bib or other cold water faucet until it runs clear. Customers are encouraged to check for discolored water before doing laundry. We regret any inconvenience the flushing might cause. Customers and the general public can assist in security efforts for our water system by reporting any non-city employees tampering with fire hydrants or other suspicious activities to the number below.
