The 1936 photographs were taken by the Army Corps of Engineers for the Willamette Valley Project and scanned into digital format by the University of Oregon MAP Library for the City of West Linn to provide to the public on this web site in 2009. The 1948 and 1996 river flooding photographs were taken by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Coverage of the 1948 photographs are along the Willamette River only. The 1988 photographs were developed by Spencer B. Gross, Inc. for the City of West Linn and scanned to digital format by the City's GIS Division. The 1996 photographs were the first GIS-ready "orthophotography*" developed by the City's Engineering Division. The 2008 photographs were developed as part of the regional "orthophotography" by the Portland Metro Consortium.** The Historic Aerial Photography Viewer was developed by the City of West Linn’s GIS staff using ESRI’s ArcGIS-Server technology.
*Orthorectified Aerial Photography Defined:
An orthorectified aerial photograph is an aerial photograph geometrically corrected so that the scale is uniform throughout the photograph and can be used to accurately measure and overlay other GIS map layers including parcel lines, utility systems, etc. Elevation data from LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging: Laser Scanning collected from an airplane) and GPS (Global Positioning System) are used to correct terrain distortion providing uniform scale and true geometry. The image is rectified and georeferenced using mathematical models of photogrammery to remove tilt, terrain, atmospheric and other digital image distortions.
**The City of West Linn is a member of the Metro Regional Air Photo Consortium which collects air photos on a yearly basis and orthorectifies these images so they can be used within the City's geographic information system (GIS).
