Marylhurst Heights Park Grand Opening
WEST LINN – Marylhurst Heights Park will host a Grand Opening Celebration and dedication on May 5, 2012. The West Linn Parks and Recreation Department has been working with neighbors of the park to plan the event, which is scheduled from 1–3 p.m. at the park. Mayor John Kovash will dedicate the park in the City’s first “Gathering Tree” ceremony. This concept was promoted by City Councilor, Teri Cummings who explained, “When traveling in warmer climates such as Nepal, New Zealand, Mexico and Hawaii, I noticed that each village had a huge tree, either central or near the main pathways, with people gathered underneath in conversation. I have heard these trees have also been used as meeting points in emergencies and to hold meetings. For us, I would hope it would become a huge tree that we can see from a great distance. One that will both provide shaded area in the summer and a sense of amazement at the immensity of trees.”
In addition to the dedication ceremony, attendees can expect bubbles and face painting for the kids, lawn game activities, seed packets and Frisbees. In observance of Cinco de Mayo, the Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a nacho bar, as long as food supplies last.
This 10-acre park property features unique amenities such as a Labyrinth, a nature based play area and will eventually include a gazebo, spray park, and restrooms.
