Patrick Noe has loved drawing from the time he was six years old. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1980 with a degree in art. His drawing remained merely a hobby until he was introduced to ceramics by his wife’s grandmother, who had been working in that medium for many years. She supplied him with a small kiln, clay, glazes, and tools and he began experimenting with clay and learning everything he could about it.
For many years Noe sold his wares at the Portland Saturday Market, evolving from Christmas ornaments to clay jewelry to handmade ceramic tile and switch plate covers. He now creates hanging wall art. He starts with drawings from which he makes a woodcut. When pressed into clay, the woodcut makes a flat relief representation of the original drawing. He then paints the clay piece with ceramic stains and colors that are fired in the kiln at 1,940 degrees Fahrenheit. He enjoys discovering new ways of working with clay and paint and being challenged by the many intricate and delicate ways in which he can explore the medium. His favorite subjects are often the pastoral scenes and architecture from the Old World. Through his art, he hopes to give relief to our busy contemporary lives by representing, in some way, the slow timeless beauty of old, so that we make our own subtle connections as to how the past influences our present.
