Historic Photos of Willamette Neighborhood on Display at the West Linn Public Library
A display of historic photographs is on display at the West Linn Public Library during July as part of the Willamette Centennial Celebration
WEST LINN - The West Linn Public Library will feature historic photographs of the Willamette Neighborhood during the month of July. The exhibit will run July 5-29, 2008, in the library’s Community Room. The Community Room is in the lobby of the Library, and is open to the public when not in use, and is always open on Sundays from noon – 5:00 p.m.
The photographs offer a view of Willamette from over 100 years ago to the 1940’s and are on display thanks to the generosity of many West Linn families. Though platted in 1893, the town of Willamette was not incorporated until 1908, so 2008 is the year celebrated as the centennial. Susan Hartford, a member of the Willamette Centennial Committee, has been working on this photograph project for a year. She connected with many old-time families in the area, collecting and scanning over 200 photos. Initially, the photographs were part of a calendar project that was created as a fundraiser for Centennial events. But as Hartford talked to more people and collected more photographs, the project grew. The Centennial Committee wanted to present the photos to a wide audience, and so the idea for the exhibit was born. Thirty photos are part of the exhibit. The photos are centered around a family theme, rather than commerce or development.
A reception will be held at the library on Sunday, July 27, 2-4 p.m. Susan Hartford will be available to answer questions and talk about the project.
