Documentary Screening at West Linn Public Library

Press release date: Mon Jun 16th, 2008
West Linn Library’s Environmental Issues Study Group Hosts Screening of “The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil.”

WEST LINN – Join the Environmental Issues Study Group on Wednesday, July 2, at 6:30 p.m. for a screening of The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil. The movie will be followed by a discussion led by book group members Ron Stone and Anne James.

The documentary chronicles what happened when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, and Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With food and oil imports drastically reduced, Cubans had to abandon their highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to a system of organic farming methods and local urban gardens.

The film also discusses peak oil: what will happen when world oil production reaches its all-time peak and begins to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis, is an example of options and hope.

The Environmental Issues Study Group meets monthly at the West Linn Public Library. They discuss environmental topics, hold community events, network with other environmental groups, and read and discuss literature about sustainability, globalism, and other pertinent developments.
