WEST LINN - On Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at 5:42pm the West Linn Police Department responded to a call of a man who had taken his family hostage and threatening to shoot them at 2010 16th Street, in the Willamette Neighborhood of West Linn.
Police learned the man, Derek Lloyd Hamby 28, had threatened to shoot his family if the police were called. He was home with his girlfriend and three children ages 2 months, 2 years, and 7 year old.
The WLPD responded to the area and established a cordon around the home. The assistance of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) was requested due to the inherent danger Mr. Hamby presented to the other occupants of his home and surrounding dwellings.
Hamby threatened to harm his family if the police so much as called into the home. Police worked with a family friend, concerned for the children and their mother, who was able to text message into the home.
He was unaware the police had surrounded his home and went outside after getting a call from his mother regarding the large amount of police activity in their neighborhood; he lives a few doors away from his parents on 16th Street, to see what was going on. Upon his exiting the home he was contacted by SWAT members and taken into custody without incident.
Hamby was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail on one count of Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree, and Menacing under the Abuse Prevention Act (APA). His bail is set at $22,500.
The investigation is ongoing and the other occupants of the home including the three children were unharmed.
WLPD had begun the process of evacuating several of the neighboring homes prior to Mr. Hamby coming out of his home.
"We are very thankful for the peaceful outcome of this incident," said WLPD Chief Terry Timeus, "We are also thankful for the assistance from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, TVF&R, AMR Ambulance and TriMet for providing a bus for shelter for evacuated residents."
