West Linn Parks & Recreation Summer Photo Challenge 2014

Picture yourself winning the Parks and Recreation 2014 Photo Challenge!

Amateur photographers of any age (with parental permission), are invited to share their best original photos taken at any West Linn Parks and Recreation facility, event, camp, program, or class.

By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that they are 18 years old or older or have parental/guardian permission.

Photos that are high resolution and best represent how Parks and Recreation enhances the already amazing experience of living in West Linn through “safe, attractive, and well maintained parks, facilities, trails, open spaces, as well as, creative and challenging recreation programs” are most desired. (All photos submitted have the possibility of being used in Parks and Recreation publications and promotions, along with photographer acknowledgement when feasible).

Submit up to twelve of your favorite Parks and Recreation photos by September 2, 2014 deadline and show what summer in West Linn means to you!


Recreation Programs, Sports, and Classes - We're looking for photos of people enjoying programs, sports, or classes that are presented by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Trails - We're looking for photos that show the appealing facets of West Linn’s trail system. Photos may include people using the trails. We're especially interested in photos of trail users in various modes of transportation - walking, running, bicycling, pushing a stroller, etc.

Wildlife & Nature -We're looking for beautiful photos of the natural areas, woods, trees, or wildlife on park lands managed by West Linn Parks and Recreation.

City of West Linn Events -West Linn Parks proudly hosts the Street Dance in Old Willamette, the Old Time Fair in Willamette Park, Music in the Park at Tanner Creek Park, and Movies in the Park at various park locations.  Photos could be an action shot or one that demonstrates the scope or best captures the spirit of an event.



Three winners will be selected per category:

Thirteen prizes will be awarded total. Winners are scheduled to be announced on September 12, 2014 on the Parks and Recreation web site and contacted by mail that week. Prizes will be presented at a reception on Friday, September 12, 2014 at the West Linn Adult Community Center, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. Additionally, all winning photographs will be displayed on the Parks and Recreation web site and as part of a traveling exhibition at the various City facilities. All winning photographers will receive an award certificate in addition to the following prizes:

Grand Prize: (Chosen from any of the four contest categories)

$250 cash, $100 Parks and Recreation gift certificate, and
The Grand Prize winning photo will be framed and displayed in the Parks and Recreation office at City Hall for one year.

First. Second and Third Prizes will be awarded in all four contest categories.

  • First Prize- $100 cash and $75 Parks and Recreation gift certificate
  • Second Prize- $50 cash and $50 Parks and Recreation gift certificate
  • Third Prize- $25 cash and $25 Parks and Recreation gift certificate



Eligibility - The contest is open to all non-professional photographers, but parent or guardian consent is required for those less than 18 years of age. City of West Linn employees and their immediate families are not eligible.

Deadline - The contest runs June through August 2014. Submissions must be received the Parks and Recreation office by 5:00 p.m. by September 2, 2014.

Photographer's Rights - Photographer retains all rights to any photographs submitted - including ownership if applicable - other than those rights licensed in the next sentence.

By entering the contest, the photographer hereby grants West Linn Parks and Recreation Department: a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, use in publications and associated trade magazines, publicly display the photographs you submit to the West Linn Parks and Recreation Department, and the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications.

Photographer's Responsibility - If you choose to include close-up shots of people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted, and must be able to provide copies of those releases to the Parks and Recreation Department upon request. (Standard model release forms can easily be found on the Internet.)

Photo Criteria

  • All photographs must have been taken during the 2014 contest period at a West Linn Parks and Recreation facility, event, sport, program, or class to be considered.
  • Photos should accurately reflect the subject matter and scene, as it appeared. Photos should not be digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, etc.).
  • Image orientation may be portrait or landscape. Images should be high resolution of at least 3.2 million pixels (3.2 megapixels) or greater.
  • Images that do not meet these requirements may or may not be judged at the judging panel's sole discretion.

How to Submit

  • Digital photos can uploaded with the webform entry below (no prints, please). The numbers on the file name should correspond with the Image #s on the Entry Form.
  • A maximum of three photographs per photographer may be submitted per contest category.
  • On the Entry Form, photos should be listed with the following information: Image # - should correspond with the number on the image file name. Location - identify the park, recreation facility, or other location where photo was taken. Description - name of event, sport, program, or class, if applicable. Category - choose one of the four photo contest categories. (Judges reserve the right to adjust the category selected when deemed appropriate.)

Judging - The judges appointed by the Parks and Recreation Department shall determine the winning entries in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final. Photograph entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Overall impact
  • Originality/creativity
  • Technical excellence
  • Artistic merit

Legal Conditions - By entering, participants agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the City of West Linn Parks and Recreation Department, its respective subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees, attorneys, agents and representatives, from any all third party liability for any injuries, loss, claim, action, demand or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the competition (collectively, "Losses"), including without limitation any third party claim for copyright infringement or a violation of an individual's right to privacy and/or publicity right.
